2013 Winter Fashion: Coats Edition

Hi Dolls,

Recently, I've been stocking up on winter coats, as there is no denying that winter is finally upon us :( Winter is one of my favourite seasons, in terms of autumn/winter fashion, christmas and all its delights, yada, yada, yada- but if there's one thing I can't stand, it's the bitter cold that accompanies winter! Boo!!

1) Fur Coat
Every lady needs a fur coat in her wardrobe, and this winter there are so many beautiful furs in a vast array of colours and styles, so you can be rest assured that whatever your preference, you can find yourself one that suits you. I've spotted some nice ones on ASOS (and ASOS Marketplace), New Look, Dorothy Perkins, QVC, H&M and for a purse-friendly bargain check out my Matalan one or your local charity shop!

Black Faux Fur Coat, £32* at Matalan

(*I paid £29.10 with a promotional discount)
Out of Stock: Similar

2) Leather Sleeved Jacket
The leather sleeved jacket is very on trend this season. Will it keep you warm in winter? Probably not, but hey who cares? Having said that, the sleeves of my H & M khaki jacket are the warmest part of the coat, but this may just be because the jacket is quite thin,

Coat with Quilted Sleeves, £34.99* at H & M

(*I paid £26.24 with a promotional discount)

3) Long Oversized Jacket
I was having a flick through a magazine (I think it may have been Woman's Weekly, but don't quote me on that) and saw Holly Willoughby in this beautiful jacket from Next, which is just gorgeous. In the magazine, it was more of a bold bright fuschia colour, so I was quite shocked, when it came and was Dark Purple, but I still loved it all the same. For a proper colour reference, I think y'all should check it out on Next's website!

Purple Drawn Coat, £75 at Next

What winter coats have you been loving this season?

Joyce Bryant- The Black Marilyn Monroe #BlackFriday

Copyright: vintagegal.tumblr.com

Joyce Bryant was a personality with extreme talent in the singing, entertainment and acting industry. The 1950s starlet was nicknamed “The Bronze Blonde Bombshell” and “The Voice You’ll Always Remember” due to her sultry voice and stunning looks.  Bryant's signature was her tinted blonde-grey hair, skintight cleavage-showing ensembles (rumour has it, her dresses were so tight, she had to be carried off stage after her performances) and her sex-appeal! She was a popular fixture in Black American nightclubs in the 50s decade, and earned up to $150,000 per year for her performances. She regularly featured in Black magazines such as 'Jet A Life', and was named as one of the most beautiful black women in the world, in the 50s.
Joyce Bryant paved the way for black women to be seen as the beautiful specimens they are, and showed that women had talents which were not restricted to households and families, which although very popular in this day and age, in her era this was practically unheard of and considered to very unconventional.
Long live the legacy of Joyce Bryant!

Have any of you got any facts about Joyce Bryant tat you'd like to share? If so, please add them in the comments section below.

#ThrowbackThursday- 90s Cartoons

I've always thought the children of today are so lucky to have cartoons, as cartoons seem to be getting better and better with age. I personally still love a good old cartoon any my faves have to include Arthur, Rugrats, Tweenies and Recess.

If you're a 90s baby, how many cartoons were you able to spot using from the picture above? Let me know in the comments section below! I could spot 8!

Last Minute Christmas Ideas For Her

As Christmas Day gets nearer and nearer, whilst some of us will be getting more and more excited, others will be getting very panicky as they've left their Christmas shopping tight until the last minute. If you happen to fall into the latter category, then fear not, and have a browse through my last minute Christmas gift ideas for females guide :)

Every girl loves a onesie. In the colder months all you wanna do is snuggle up to something warm and cosy, which is why this red-spotted onesie from Tesco's F & F (Florence & Fred) range is a must-buy.

Boots never fails to deliver and every year, they reduce Soap & Glory's Yule Monty set which features 10 items, usually retails £60, but is worth £73 in value to a shocking £27. These are currently sold out online, but you can check the availability of the sets in your local Boots store by using their store locator.

Makeup is one of those presents that every girl loves. Now as we all know, makeup can be a tad pricey, which is why it's always a good idea to keep you eye out on the bargains. The Color Institute Making Up Is Even Easier MakeUp Set has been reduced from £18.99 to £12.49 at Argos, which is bargain-alicious. I previously sampled my friend's blusher from their collection, and it was just divine.

Who said bootees were just for babies? Check out this cute pair from M & M Direct. With postage and packaging, they'll only set you back £13.98. Live a little ;)

I personally never really used to be that into candles and couldn't understand why people spent so much money on them. But recently whenever I pop into TK Maxx and have a smell of what's on offer I can almost understand it. I haven't been able to persuade myself to give large sums of hard-earned dosh to Yankee, but Next and TK Maxx are really doing it for me. Prices start from £12.99.

A festive jumper will make a great pressie. It's warm, cute, and bang on-season. For under a tenner, what's not to love?

Add some sparkle and shine to your special woman's Christmas wardrobe with a glitzy piece.

A perfume gift set makes a lovely Xmas pressie, for bargains be sure to check out All Beauty (previously Cheap Smells), Fragrance Direct and Amazon. You have to be quite careful about perfumes, because it's not necessarily a one-size-fits-all approach, as us ladies can be very particular with our scents. One perfume that I'm quite fond of is Vera Wang's Lovestruck, which is a very floral, musky, fruity scent. Vera Wang describes the fragrance as: "the emotion and rush you feel when you are falling in love and going for it, those heart-pounding moments of spontaneity." As it's an EDP, you definitely get more pound for your buck as it's quite long-lasting. The 50ml EDP, is accompanied with a 75ml Shower Gel & Body Lotion, which for £31.65 and free delivery, you can't really beat!

For a bath & body gift set that looks good enough to eat, cop a handmade Bomb Cosmetics Chocolate Bath Set. Think Lush goodies minus the price tag. FYI,  it's been reduced to £7.89 from £9.99, so snap yours up quickly :)
Bath Cosmetics via Amazon
This clutch is not very Christmassy but will make a beautiful addition to any woman's wardrobe. As it's on Ebay, there's no telling what the eventual price of this item will be, but the last one was under a tenner, so this one's likely to be around the same amount.

If you're special woman has got a penchant for all things sweet, then be sure to pop on over to Tesco's (via Thorntons) for a box of these chocolate delicacies.

Every girl needs some good quality make-up brushes to put in her make-up bag. Invest in these beauties from Eco-tools and bag your lady a free cosmetics bag in the process.

Hope this Christmas Guide list was helpful. What will you be getting your female friends and relatives this Christmas? Let me know in the comments section below!

Thank you God!

How often do we take the time out to thank God for life itself and all he has already done for us?
Not often enough, for most methinks.

Just a little reminder to thank God, just because in the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, this necessity can so easily be forgotten.

R.I.P. Nelson Mandela #BlackFriday

R.I.P. to the man who helped bring apartheid to a halt and mould South Africa into what it is today! Wrongly imprisoned for 27 years, Nelson Mandela was prepared to die in prison, if it meant that South Africa would treat all citizens as equal, regardless of skin colour. The world may have just lost one of the greatest legends, but heaven just gained a new angel! You may be gone, but you'll never be forgotten, as your legacy still lives on!

#BOTM- Book Of The Month

Recently I've been reading 'A Thousand Splendid Suns' which is by Khaled Hosseini. This post is actually a belated one, as technically I finished reading the book a couple of days ago.
There are two main characters in the novel: Mariam and Laila, who initially are enemies, but throughout the duration of the book become dear friends. It is through these character's eye we are told the story of the Afghan Civil War, and the effects of its aftermath. The book incorporates various themes some of which include love, romance, arranged marriages, war, gender scripts and domestic violence.
I do not want to give too much of the book away, as I actually do want you to read it, so I've been careful to only give details that scratch the surface as opposed to extensive details. Many readers have compared it to The Kite Runner (which is also by Hosseini), saying if you loved that book, then you'll deffo love this one, however I've never read The Kite Runner, but will deffo tell you I loved this book.

Check out the blurb:
"Mariam is only fifteen when she is sent to Kabul to marry Rasheed. Nearly two decades later, a friendship grows between Mariam and a local teenager, Laila, as strong as the ties between mother and daughter. When the Taliban take over, life becomes a desperate struggle against starvation, brutality and fear. Yet love can move a person to act in unexpected ways, and lead them to overcome the most daunting obstacles with a startling heroism." (*Copyright: Khaled Hosseini)

Overall rating: 5/5

Have any of you read 'A Thousand Splendid Suns?' or any of Khaled Hosseini's books? If so what did you think of it/them?

My 21st Birthday

Yesterday, it was my 21st birthday. This year I decided to celebrate my birthday the day before my ACTUAL birthday, as my actual birthday was on a Saturday and there's not much you can do on a Sunday, and I wanted to spend my actual birthday in my father's house.
I went to Chiquito's for dinner and then in the evening went to Penthouse which was really good. It was made even better by the fact that I got a free stamp, which enabled me to get free entry into the club. #FunTimes
Kim Kardashian Eat Your Heart Out #Contour&Highlighting
I got my makeup done at MAC Brixton. I've never been to MAC Brixton to get my makeup done before, as I usually go to the one in Selfridges, (Oxford Street). I had my makeup done by MAC MUA Bumni. We had a bit of a problem with my eyebrows, as she had pencilled mine in really thickly and in a McDonald's M shape which was too awkward for words. After 3 failed attempts, I decided to concealer an outline of the shape I'd like my eyebrows to follow, which worked out perfectly in the end. My makeup was really good, especially in the eye department, however Bumni matched me to NC44 as she said the MAC Studio Tech foundations come up darker, however I feel a MAC NC45 foundation would have been better suited to my skin colour. I'm not sure if you can see it in the pic, but my face is a noticeably different colour to my face.
I didn't get to take much pics as my phone's bat was super low, but I've captured a few moments below:

The contents of my face

The Finished Look

Mocktails at Chiquitos
The customer service in Chiquito's Croydon was appalling. The staff were very ill-mannered and only few were helpful or nice :/

The Hummingbird Bakery's Famous Rainbow Cake
Although I spent a small fortune on my 21st, and planning the event was extremely stressful, and I didn't get to take any pics on the night as my phone's battery was half-dead, it was a joyous occastion and am happy that everything worked out well in the end!
I actually can't believe I'm 21, I feel so old haha :)

If you guys would like a full make-up product list to be added, do let me know via the comments section and I'll update this post accordingly :D

Quote of The Week: When Life Gives You A Lemon...

'When Life Gives You A Lemon, Make A Lemonade'

On this day, two weeks ago, I was having a very bad Tuesday. Granted we all have bad days every once in a while, but this was pretty up there in terms of bad days for me. You know when one thing goes wrong, then another and then another, and then you just feel like, do you know what I don't even think I wanna do this anymore? Yeah that! That was me like 2 weeks ago! Previously, I had managed to secure a one week work experience at Bournemouth’s local Christian radio station ‘Hope FM', so excitedly booked a coach ticket to Bournemouth.
Rather ironically I watched Patricia Bright's video: 'Tips For Dealing With Disappointment' in the early hours of the morning, not knowing or appreciating the significance or impact her words would have later on in my day.
Unfortunately I missed my first coach, so had to book another ticket for 12pm on Monday, which I then ended up missing because I mixed up my coach times. I then tried to amend my ticket, but was told that as my 12pm coach ticket was a fanfare (discounted) ticket it was non-refundable, and amending my ticket would be a pointless venture, as the price it would cost to do that would be more than the cost of a new ticket. So feeling very irked I purchased another coach ticket, and my new departure time was 1pm.  Having arrived at Victoria Coach Station with 10 minutes to spare, I managed to get lost, and by the time I arrived at my departure gate, I saw my coach just leaving. So again I had to amend my ticket for an additional cost of £5, which meant that the cumulative cost of three tickets were practically the same price as a train ticket! Considering, I was supposed to be saving money, I was not too pleased. When amending my tickets, I was told that the 3pm coach was full, and would have to wait until the 4.30pm coach before my journey could begin.
Credit: zazzle.com
At this point I was beyond angry, and just felt like if I ended up missing another coach, I'd just go home as I was just not in the mood anymore. I was so angry that I wanted to cry, scream, vent... y'name it! I wanted to cry not because I was upset or sad, but y'know when you're just too frustrated that all you actually wanna do is cry. I couldn't even vent about it to anyone as my phone's battery was really low, and I needed to save it, so I could let my friend Steph know when I'd finally arrived (as she was picking me up). After wallowing in my misery for a minute or two, I decided I didn't wanna be stressed anymore, and was going to see the silver lining in my cloudy day. After all, what would being stressed and annoyed solve? It wouldn't enable me to time-travel, so I could have got my first initial coach. Nor would it help me with the 2.5 hour wait that I had to endure whilst waiting for my next coach. IF anything, it would just wind me up further, and trust me I didn't need any more winding up.
Credit: inkhappi.com
And d'you wanna know the funniest thing, when I decided to actually let go of the anger and annoyance, I actually didn't think it was such a BIG DEAL and I felt so much better. I immediately felt less stressed and relieved, and did not feel angry at all!
Why? OK yes, I had missed three coaches, yes I had an additional 2.5 hour wait until my next coach, and yes my phone was about to die at any given second, BUT, I was still going to Bournemouth, I'd still get the chance to do my placement, I'd still get to see my old friends, I was still living and breathing, so why die and cry about something I was powerless to change? Why not just let it be?
So that's exactly what I did!
What did this experience teach me? Sometimes the going gets tough, but when the going gets tough, you've just gotta get that little bit more resillient. So, life decided to throw some lemons into my jug of life, well I decided to turn those lemons into a lemonade.

In the comments section below finish this phrase for me: "When life gives me a lemon..."

As always until next time, stay blessed and beautiful dolls xoxo

Superdrug Lewisham Review: Is being black a crime?

Today's #BlackFriday post is one I've been 'umming' and 'ahhing' about writing about for some time, but I finally decided to bite the bullet, and just go ahead and write it. On Thursday 25th July 2013 my cousin and I went to Superdrug Lewisham to pick up a few bits and bobs. Upon entering the store, we noticed the security guard was just dossing around and not really doing his job. As soon as he saw us he suddenly became very alert and started following us around 'discreetly'. From the way he was following us around it was very obvious that he thought we wanted to steal our items.
My cousin Hannah had been previously telling me about the Maybelline 24Hour Lip Colours, as she has recently discovered them and is in super in love with the product. She was so in love with her new best friend, she'd even put some on her lips that day. We were looking for the exact colour she had on her lips, but couldn't see the lip butter anywhere in the Maybelline aisle. As we couldn't find it Hannah brought out her lipgloss to let me see the name, so we could see if it was in store. As soon as she put HER lip butter in her bag, the security guard charged over saying: "I saw you put something of ours in your bag". To which, Hannah replied: "Yeah my lipgloss. I put it in my bag because it was mine."
At this point the security guard clearly felt embarrassed as he had let his suspicions and pre-judgement of us cloud our true character and actual actions, which meant he was unable to do his job properly. This post could end up being very long-winded, so below I will break down and bullet point all the key stages at which Superdrug failed my cousin, and I:

Superdrug Lewisham, SE13 6JL

* Security Guard- The security guard was extremely unprofessional and rude. Here are a few of the insults which were directed at us: "I will not tell you guys my name, because you are not worthy"
"Is the hair on your head even real?"
May I add, that as if the verbal results weren't enough, he actually pushed Hannah, and at one point I actually had to stand in front of her bodyguarding her, and raising my arms in a shield-like movement as I was scared he would actually hit her or worse.
*Laura + Rose- 2 Superdrug emloyees discussed the scene with other customers in the shop, and NEVER at one point did anything to help.
*Muhammad- A Superdrug employee who was on tills at the time, was the only memeber of staff that behaved as if he had been given customer service training, and apologised to us for the aggravation, and gave us Head Office details when asked.
*Gifty- The Store Manager escalated and aggravated the situation further, by deciding her beloved security guard, who had worked in the store for 8 years was right, without looking at the cameras!
Sue Tipler- Customer Care Tem Rep. assured me she was chasing up the matter, when she did nothing of the sort.
*Miss Wan- Head of Customer Operations promised me call backs, and assured me she was treating the matter appropriately and seriously. This was a LIE!
*Regional Manager- Kamila Dajnowska told me although she was Regional Manager, she didn't cover the Lewisham store in particular, so offered no help. Granted she could not directly help, but she could have at least pointed me in the direction of someone who could help.
*Other RGMS- Lynne Gunner, Karen Turner, Sarah Berry, James Rumsey- Collectively did NOTHING despite the numerous emails and phone calls I made.

We called the police at the time of the incident and were told the matter was under investigation, but I bet you can guess how helpful they were without me having to tell you? (CLUE: As helpful as a hole in the head).  We (as in Hannah and I) obviously contacted Superdrug's Head Office and requested a written apology and compensation for the incident. After numerous emails with one of the customer care representatives, (Sue Tipler) offered me and my cousin an apology email and a £5 Superdrug gift voucher which she proposed me and Hannah should share. The fact that we don't have the written apology we requested is insulting enough, but the cherry on the cake is that Sue seems to think awarding each of us £2.50 (by terms of compensation) is even more so insulting!

**UPDATE** After refusing the £2.50 gift voucher, by way of apology, we were then awarded a £10 gift voucher each. I decided to not accept this, but my cousin requested hers, and received NOTHING! As a result of this, although I may visit OTHER Superdrug stores in future, I have no wish to speak about Superdrug from this point further on my blog, so if I do make any future purchases from the store I will not be naming where I've obtained them from. I'm sure you guys understand :)
I'd be very interested to hear what you guys' thoughts on the matter are, so do let me know if anything similar has happened to you in any store (although I'd be especially interested to know if this has happened to you guys in other Superdrug stores or even the Lewisham branch itself?

As always until next time, stay blessed and beautiful dolls xoxo

#NBN Workshop

Yesterday, I attended the Next Blogger Network (#NBN) Workshop. As I have never been to a blogging event, I was beyond excited.
For those of you wondering what the Next Blogger Network is, it's basically a platform that allows bloggers, brands and Next to collaborate together. Need more information? Or if you think you'd like to join, then head over here!
The day ran from 10am-4pm, and there was lots to get involved with and lots to eat (but we'll have more on that later)! We were split into groups and given blogger workshops which were hosted by industry experts. The 'Photography and Film' workshop was hosted by Lily from What I Heart Today, Anna from Vivianna Does Makeup and Kit from Style Slicker, whilst 'SEO and Web Design' was run by Britt Soeder, SEO Campaign Director of Green Light and Faye from Fashion Beauty Etc. Last but not least, the 'Brand and Advertising' workshop was hosted by Emily from Fashion Foie Gras and Abi from Abimarvel.
The workshops were very informative and I definitely learned a lot of useful tips and tricks that I'll be incorporating into my blog. Here are some 'Three Top Tips' that I'd like to share with y'all:
  1. SEO and Web Design- Make sure your page is as user-friendly as possible. Don't clutter your sidebar with icons, or use pale writing on dark dark backgrounds (e.g. white font colour/ black background), as although these may appear cool, they can be quite hard to read and off-putting for visitors!
  2. Brand and Advertising- Aim high. The sky really is your limit. You never know where blogging can take you. Lily Pebbles and Anna are self-employed bloggers who are now earning a living through their blog!
  3. Photography and Film- Kit says: "Pay attention to lighting and weather" as these can have a massive impact on the quality of pictures produced.

Here's a cheeky snap of myself, Demi and Miranda which we took in the DIY photo frame for the #NBNWorkshop Polaroid Competition. Say Cheese :)
The Next team were all very helpful and super friendly, and we were wined and dined until we were full to the brim. There were croissants, muffins, tea or hot chocolate for breakfast, pasta, chips and salad for lunch. To top it all the fridge was fully stocked with Coke, Sprite, water and more. Anyone that knows me knows I'm addicted to Coke (of the liquid variety mind) so I was in absolute bliss! As if that wasn't enough off there was afternoon tea, a free sweet tuck shop and cocktails at the end of the day.

How gorgeous are these biscuits? Might I just add these biscuits taste as good as they look too! #AbsolutelyScrumptious
Next was kind enough to give us all goodie bags, each goodie bag contained a white pleather notebook,  a luxury candle, one pair of fluffy socks, and a mini photo frame. Each of us got different socks, so it was kind of like a lottery draw as to which pair you got. How cute are my faux fur socks?
My luxury candle is in the scent Jasmine and Tigerlily and smells amazing. I can't wait to try it out soon!
Copyright- Next
Here are me and my new friends. From left to right, we have Demi, Miranda, me, Nicole and Rupinder. Might I just add we were the last ones to leave?  We didn't wanna go, as The NBN Workshop was too much fun!
For all new and upcoming bloggers, if you ever get an invitation to a blogger's event, try and go, as it's a great place to network, start collaborative ventures, and great exposure too!
That's all for now m'lovelies. As always until next time, stay blessed and beautiful dolls xoxo

#ThrowbackThursday: Black Model Was Cover Star For Elle

Hi Dolls,
Anyone remember this? This is a throwback of Elle Magazine's November 1997 issue, which featured the beautiful model Alek Wek as a cover star. I love that Elle (US) was bold enough to take this move, especially as many magazines that cater to European women have pointed out that when women of colour are used as cover stars, there is a big decline in magazine sales. We live in a multi-cultural world, and one day I do hope that the world and all its institutions i.e. beauty, magazine industry, media, etc.) will equally respect and value all humans regardless of their race, social class, nationality, gender and religion.

As always until next time, stay blessed and beautiful dolls xoxo
